Welcome to the world of Balancing Bru, where the ancient art of rock balancing meets modern creativity and mindfulness. I’m Greg Jagassar, the artist behind Balancing Bru, and I’m thrilled to share my journey, philosophy, and passion for this unique art form with you.
Born and raised in Canada, I now call Switzerland my home. My path to rock balancing began as a personal exploration of mindfulness and creativity, and it has since evolved into a full-fledged artistic practice that I am deeply passionate about. As a rock balancer, I am known for creating gravity-defying sculptures that not only captivate the eye but also inspire a deep sense of peace and connection with nature. The nickname “Bru” is a tribute to my older brother Terry, with whom I share this childhood nickname. Our bond has always been a source of strength for me, and I dedicate my practice to him, honoring his endless support and guidance.
My journey into the world of rock balancing began in 2017, but the seeds of this practice were planted much earlier in my life. Growing up in Canada, I was always drawn to the natural world—the vast forests, the rugged mountains, and the serene lakes. These landscapes instilled in me a deep appreciation for nature’s beauty and power, which would later become a central theme in my art.
When I moved to Switzerland in 2008, I found myself surrounded by breathtaking scenery that reignited my connection with nature. The towering Alps, crystal-clear lakes, and ancient stones scattered across the landscape inspired me to explore new ways of expressing my creativity. It was in this environment that I discovered rock balancing, an art form that combines the natural beauty of stones with the meditative practice of finding balance.
Initially, rock balancing was a personal practice—a way for me to meditate, focus my mind, and connect with the world around me. However, as I began sharing my creations with others, I realized that this art form had the power to inspire and captivate audiences. In 2017, I started performing rock balancing shows and leading workshops across Europe, bringing this unique art to festivals, private events, and public spaces.
Rock balancing is more than just an artistic practice—it is a philosophy and a way of life. At its core, rock balancing is about finding harmony between seemingly opposing forces: gravity and balance, stillness and motion, nature and human intervention. This balance is not just physical but also mental and spiritual.
In the practice of rock balancing, each stone is carefully chosen and placed in such a way that it seems to defy gravity. The process requires intense focus, patience, and a deep connection with the stones themselves. It is a practice that demands mindfulness—a state of being fully present in the moment, aware of each breath, each movement, and each sensation.
This mindfulness extends beyond the act of balancing stones. It permeates every aspect of life, encouraging us to find balance in our thoughts, actions, and relationships. In this way, rock balancing becomes a metaphor for life itself, teaching us to remain centered and grounded, even in the face of challenges.
One of the most distinctive aspects of Balancing Bru is the fusion of rock balancing with live music. I believe that art should engage all the senses, and by combining the visual art of rock balancing with the auditory art of music, I create a multi-sensory experience that resonates deeply with audiences.
Music has always been a powerful force in my life, and it plays a central role in my performances. Whether it’s the rhythmic beats of a live DJ or the soothing melodies of acoustic instruments, music enhances the meditative quality of rock balancing and adds a dynamic element to the performance. The interaction between the music and the balancing stones creates a unique atmosphere, where the audience can feel the rhythm of the earth and the pulse of life itself.
This fusion of art forms not only captivates the audience but also deepens my own connection with the stones and the environment. Each performance is a collaborative dance between the rocks, the music, and myself, resulting in a one-of-a-kind experience that leaves a lasting impression.
Rock balancing has had a profound impact on my life, and I am passionate about sharing this art with others. Through my shows and workshops, I have seen firsthand how this practice can inspire creativity, promote mindfulness, and foster a deeper connection with nature.
Creativity is at the heart of rock balancing. Each stone presents a new challenge, a new opportunity to create something beautiful and unique. The process of balancing stones encourages out-of-the-box thinking, problem-solving, and artistic expression. It is a reminder that creativity is not confined to traditional art forms but can be found in the simplest of actions, like placing one stone on top of another.
Mindfulness is another key aspect of rock balancing. The practice requires total concentration and a calm mind, making it a powerful tool for reducing stress and enhancing mental clarity. Many people who participate in my workshops find that rock balancing helps them quiet their minds, focus their thoughts, and achieve a state of inner peace. It is a form of moving meditation that brings both the body and mind into harmony.
Finally, rock balancing fosters a deep connection with nature. In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, it is easy to become disconnected from the natural environment. Rock balancing offers a way to reconnect with the earth, to feel the texture of the stones, to listen to the sounds of the natural world, and to appreciate the beauty of the landscape. It is a practice that encourages respect for nature and reminds us of our place within the larger ecosystem.
Since 2017, I have had the privilege of sharing the art of rock balancing with audiences across Europe. From intimate gatherings to large festivals, my performances have captivated and inspired people of all ages and backgrounds. Each show is a unique experience, shaped by the environment, the audience, and the music.
In addition to performances, I offer workshops where participants can learn the art of rock balancing themselves. These workshops are designed for all skill levels, from beginners to experienced balancers. I provide personalized instruction and guidance, helping participants develop their skills, explore their creativity, and experience the meditative benefits of rock balancing.
But Balancing Bru is more than just a series of performances and workshops—it is a community. A community of individuals who share a love for creativity, mindfulness, and the natural world. I invite you to join this community, whether by attending a performance, participating in a workshop, or simply following my journey online.
